Yard Work & Gardening: Alleviate Muscle Pain this Spring

Tips to Prevent and Alleviate Muscle Pain from Our Newcastle Chiropractor

Some people love yard work and gardening, while others begrudgingly deal with it. Regardless of which category you fit into, these tips from our team at Chiropractic Wellness Center can help reduce or prevent any muscle pain you might develop.

Prepare Your Tools for the Day

Before you head out into your yard, take some time to prepare. First, wear good, supportive shoes and fill a water bottle. Then, keep that bottle filled, and stay hydrated while you work.

Also, make sure you have the proper tools for the job. Using the incorrect one can make your job harder, increasing your risk of muscle pain and injuries. Keep some knee pads handy. They can help protect your knees or elbows.

Warm Your Muscles Up

You wouldn’t want to run a marathon without warming up first. Treat gardening and yard work the same way. Do stretching and simple warm-up exercises for at least five minutes before diving in.

Practice Good Posture and Proper Lifting

You must be mindful of your form throughout your work day. For example, your back should remain straight and your head slightly forward. If you need to bend, do so from your knees instead of your waist. Additionally, if you lift anything, use your legs and carry the object close to your body.

Take Breaks

Taking breaks is essential whether you’re working outside for an hour or five. Rest, drink water, and try to fit in a few stretches to keep your muscles loosened.

Finish Strong

When you’re done for the day, repeat your stretches. You might want to spend more than five minutes in this session. Take a pleasant shower to relieve tension. Then, drink some more water and rest.
